I followed my career initially in the Ministry of Defence, and then in the world-class, major chemical manufacturing company Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). Unfortunately, ICI effectively went bust in the early years of the 21st century, after what I believe was serious company mis-management which led to the company selling off most of its businesses to pay for a huge, misjudged speculative purchase which went seriously wrong and left them in immense debt. Some of those sold compaies are still operating. Eventually the remnants of the main company were bought by Akzo Nobel. If you buy ICI paint to decorate your home, it was made by what used to be Paints Division of ICI, but is now part of Akzo Nobel.

In the first part of my 21 years in ICI, it was a wonderful company to work for. It was usually considered a barometer of the UK industrial health, and was the UK’s most profitable industrial concern. I worked in design, research and development, production technical and operations management, and internal consultancy. As it slumped, I left and worked for other companies for a few years before becoming a self-employed consultant.

I traded as the sole engineering employee of my company Chemical Engineering Design and Consultancy Services Ltd (CEDCS Ltd) for 14 years. Initially I did general chemical engineering work before concentrating on the topics that interested me most (see the links above).
