A lifetime in chemical

engineering

At   64   years   old,   I’ve   been   in   chemical   engineering   for   48   years   now.   That   seems   amazing   to   me, but   as   a   16-year-old   student,   when   my   chemistry   teacher   and   my   engineering   teacher   both recommended    university    to    read    their    subject,    an    ideal    solution    was    found    in    chemical engineering.   It   has   fascinated   me   all   my   life   and   I   would   recommend   it   to   any   young   person considering   it   as   a   career.   I’ve   never   considered   any   other   career   since   then.   I   hope   to   be   doing chemical engineering for many years to come.

Profile Stuart    Ord    is    a    chemical    process    engineer    and    technologist,    with    wide    experience    in    technical    and management    issues.    He    has    worked    on    traditional    chemical    plants    (batch    and    continuous,    organic, inorganic,   oil,   gas)   and   nuclear   plants,   in   technical   consultancy,   research,   design,   operation   improvement, production   and   management   functions.   With   a   career   mainly   with   ICI,   but   also   with   the   Ministry   of Defence    and    BNFL,    he    now    works    as    a    private    consultant    where    he    specialises    in    technical    safety subjects.
